Preparing to work with PDF
Before you can create PDF documents, you will have to add additional
software.
- If you work with Office 2007, your best choice is to install
2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS. It is small
high quality freeware PDF converter. Once you have installed that, you are
ready and it will work.
- If you don't have Office 2007 you may have to install
- a postscript printer driver. You may already have a postscript
printer, in which case you don't have to install anything. If not you can
download a virtual postscript printer driver. The following can be used:
- MS Publisher Imagesetter (if you already have that, installed with earlier
versions of Office). To install the MS Publisher Imagesetter virtual printer,
open the `Printers` settings folder, and click `Add Printer`. Select a local
printer; since it is virtual, select the FILE: port. Specify `Generic` as
manufacturer, and then you can choose the MS Publisher Imagesetter.
- CutePDF
Writer: no license needed to use only as PS virtual printer
- PDFCreator: large
download, but freeware and usable for other PDF conversion tasks
- you also need a program to convert the postscript file to PDF. You can
use
- Adobe Acrobat Professional (or the previous Acrobat Distiller) (commercial
software)
- Ghostscript (freeware)
for conversion to postscript to PDF
